New Zealand 2014

Billy got an invite to go and race the Suzuki Tri Series in December 2014, because he only got back from Afghanistan in the November everything got a bit squished up. His girlfriend Hannah said it was “fine” to go (only kidding Hannah) so after a week with Hannah in Egypt late November Billy and two of his mates flew out to New Zealand. They met up with a guy called Beau McFarlane who is a friend of the family and had supplied a Suzuki 600, and the trip was ON. Because of the late arrival Billy had missed the first round of the series, so he did some testing at Manfield in the north island. Then the lads went on a trip to the south island for some extreme sports. Then back up to the north for the second round at Hampton Downs, he was trying to ride round a few handling problems which resulted in a small crash. In the aftermath of this crash the bike was repaired and put on the dyno, which when on it proceeded to promptly shit itself. So the hunt was on for another bike before the last round at the Wanganui street circuit.

To the rescue came Joe, Barb and Perry Lett with a Honda CBR600, and after some frantic workshop fettling it was ready for Boxing Day. Just a small matter of doing a few laps in a car driven by Guy Martin and some pre-race interviews with Billy, Guy and Billy’s mates, they were ready. New to the circuit and on a bike he hadn’t ridden before he managed to get a couple of top ten finishes and qualified for the Robert Holden race. He was hooked and pledged to be back next year. 2015 saw an invite to go back, and a local racer Marcus Beagley was to put a Kawasaki ZXR600 under him. This time joining him as his support would be Hannah, Leanne, Ringo, Mum and Dad. We all had a whale of a time, Julie and Flea Willacy the organisers of the Tri Series showed us all fabulous hospitality.

The racing went a lot better with Biggles Racing, Billy had a great mechanic in Joel Dykstra who had to earn his money with Billy having a practice crash and blowing an engine up. But good results at he first two rounds set him up for a good run out at Wanganui. The Boxing Day racing didn’t disappoint with a fourth in the 600 races beating Shaun Harris a seasoned campaigner at Wanganui. It was a very much enjoyed chapter in his short career, but we met some lovely people out there who are still good friends. The world over motorcyclists are a brotherhood, we all speak the same language.

.... and finally
